Closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Holiday hours can move around those dates — call ahead if you're planning a trip in the last week of December.
Every purchase happens at the counter during these hours. There is no online checkout, and we don't ship ammunition.

Directions, Parking and the Suite Number
The freeways that get you here
Kearny Mesa sits near the middle of the county, which is the whole reason this drive works from almost anywhere in San Diego. Mercury St runs through the business district a short way off Convoy St, so if you know the Convoy food strip, you already know the neighborhood.
Coming from the coast, Mission Valley or downtown, SR-163 is the usual approach. From the north, SR-52 runs straight across the top of the mesa. From the south and the west, I-805 and the 805–163 corridor bring you in from that side. If you're running down I-15, cut across on 52 or 163 rather than picking your way through surface streets — it is quicker almost every time.
Look for the suite, not a storefront
We are Suite 103. This is a business park rather than a strip mall on a main road, so the building number gets you to the right block and the suite number gets you to the right door. If you've circled the block twice, call 858-987-0509 and someone will talk you in. It happens most days and nobody minds.
Parking
Parking is off-street, in the lot that serves the building — no meters, no parking structure, no app to download. The lot is shared with the other tenants in the park, so around the middle of the day you may have to walk a row or two. Give yourself a couple of extra minutes at lunchtime and you'll be fine.
How far out is it worth the drive?
Clairemont, Serra Mesa, Linda Vista, Mission Valley and Tierrasanta are all short hops — most of those are a handful of minutes on surface streets. MCAS Miramar is immediately north of the mesa, so for anyone stationed there this is close to the nearest ammo counter you can reach without getting on a freeway for long.
From the South Bay — Chula Vista, National City, Imperial Beach — it is a straight run north on I-805. From North County, whether you come down I-15 through Escondido and Poway or down I-805 from the coast, it is one freeway most of the way. Camp Pendleton is the long one: plan on the better part of an hour each way depending on traffic, and come on a weekday morning if you can pick your time.
Whichever direction you're coming from, the same advice applies — text or call before you leave and ask whether what you want is on the shelf. We would much rather tell you to wait a week than have you burn a tank of gas on a maybe.

Before you come in
What to Bring for an Ammo Purchase
California puts an eligibility check between you and every box of ammunition. None of it is difficult, but showing up without the right ID is the one thing that turns a ten-minute stop into a wasted trip.
A current California ID
A California driver's license or ID card. If yours reads FEDERAL LIMITS APPLY in the corner it is not a REAL ID, so bring proof of lawful presence as well — a US passport or a certified birth certificate — and expect to bring it every visit, not just the first one.
An address that matches your DOJ record
The address you give at the counter has to match what the California DOJ holds for you in the Automated Firearms System. Updating your license at the DMV does not update that record — they are separate systems. Fixing it is free at cfars.doj.ca.gov, and doing it before you drive out is the single best use of five minutes we can suggest.
The right age for what you're buying
18 and over for rifle and shotgun ammunition, 21 and over for handgun ammunition. If you're 18 to 20 and after a caliber that runs in both a rifle and a handgun, call us before you come — the law leaves that call to the vendor, and we would rather talk it through than have you make the trip for nothing.
A few minutes for the eligibility check
Every ammunition purchase in California goes through a DOJ eligibility check at the counter, and the state charges a fee for it that we collect on the state's behalf — that fee is the state's, not ours. Most regular buyers clear in a minute or two. If the DOJ has no record matching your details it becomes a manual review that can take several days, and you'll need to come back.

California's ammunition rules change, and the background-check requirement is currently being litigated — a case is with the Ninth Circuit and no decision has issued, so as things stand the check is fully in force and we run one on every sale. How California's ammo law worksOne thing worth saying plainly
We sell ammunition and accessories. We do not sell firearms, and there is no shooting range at this location — if you turn up expecting either, we'll point you somewhere that can help, but it won't be here. Everything is bought in person at the counter: no cart, no checkout, no shipping. And we're still building our inventory up over the coming months, so a call before you drive over is always the smart move.

5 months agoBased on some recent reviews, apparently this place is under new ownership. Clearly some kinks need to be ironed out, and hopefully things improve in the future. This used to be my go-to spot for anything bulk in SoCal, but more often it’s been disappointing for myself or friends. -Stock is low variety and quantity. Going to guess the ownership change is causing some supply issues, since I see stock elsewhere. - Prices are rough. .308 is already expensive enough, but seems prices are double here than I’ve found elsewhere (In-store, not online). -Website never lines up with what they have in-store. This has always been a thing with this location, since brick & mortar spots can’t offer the same as online pricing. But whatever is going on with the ownership swap has their website all screwed up. I’m seeing what looks like super good deals, listed for this location, only to be told it’s not them/they’re not affiliated with LAX/FM. ??? The site literally points to this place. Oh well. My mistake, I guess. May as well just take a day trip and hang out in OC to grab bulk from Rifle Gear. Seems to be my only option to get anything reasonable Hoping things swing back to normal. Really was the only place I told people to buy ammo lol. Can’t say that now

From 22 to 50bmg weather you spend $20 or $2000 on ammo they treat all customers with respect and will bend over backwards to make sure you get what you want. Ammunition shops can't buy ads on Facebook, Instagram, Google or TikTok — the platforms don't allow it. What people find instead is our Google listing, and it is the whole reason anybody new walks through the door. If somebody here sorted you out, two lines on it does more for a small shop than anything we could pay for.
And if we got it wrong, say that too. We would rather read it and fix it than not know.
