Updating your AFS record for ammo purchases
Why your California firearm record matters at the ammo counter
One of the most common issues California shooters run into when buying ammo is a mismatch in their Automated Firearms System (AFS) record. If the state’s records don’t show a firearm registered to your current name and address, your ammo eligibility check can fail even when you’re otherwise allowed to own and possess firearms.
At LAX Ammo San Diego we see this a lot with customers who have moved, changed addresses, or purchased firearms before certain record systems were in place. This page explains, in plain English, what the AFS record is, why it matters when you buy ammunition in California, and where you can go to update or correct your information.
This guide is for general information only and is not legal advice. We can’t change your AFS record for you, but we can help you understand the process and point you toward official California resources. If you have questions after reading, call 858-987-0509 or ask us in store.
