Range vs Self-Defense Ammo: What’s the Difference?

A super common question we hear at LAX Ammo San Diego:

“Can I just use the same ammo for the range and for home defense?”

Short answer: you can, but you probably shouldn’t.

Range ammo and self-defense ammo are two different tools for two different jobs. You don’t need a PhD in ballistics to get this right—you just need to understand the basics and build a simple plan that fits your firearm, your budget and your reality.

Let’s break it down in plain English.

1. What we mean by “range ammo”

When we say range ammo, we’re talking about the stuff you use for:

  • Regular practice

  • Classes and qualifications

  • Zeroing/confirming sights

  • General training days

Most pistol and rifle range ammo is:

  • Often FMJ (Full Metal Jacket)

  • Built to be dependable and affordable

  • Sold in bulk boxes or cases so you can shoot more for the same money

  • Designed more for consistency and cost than fancy performance

If you’re burning through rounds to get better with your gun, this is what you want most of the time.

Think of range ammo as your “training gas”—the everyday fuel you run through the engine so you actually get good behind the trigger.

2. What we mean by “self-defense ammo”

Self-defense ammo is designed with serious, real-world use in mind:

  • Home defense

  • Concealed carry

  • Duty use (law enforcement, certain security roles)

Characteristics:

  • Often JHP (Jacketed Hollow Point) or other defensive designs

  • Generally more expensive per round

  • Tuned for reliability and consistency under stressful, real conditions

  • Sold in smaller boxes, not usually bulk

This is the ammo you set aside for the situations you hope never happen. You don’t mag-dump this all day at the range—most people use enough to test reliability, then reserve it for serious use.

3. FMJ vs hollow point – simple version

Without going into drawn-out ballistic arguments:

  • FMJ (Full Metal Jacket) – what you mostly see in range ammo

    • Simple, reliable designs

    • Great for paper, steel, training, classes

    • Affordable for volume shooting

  • JHP (Jacketed Hollow Point) and similar designs – common in defensive ammo

    • Typically engineered for controlled behavior in defensive use

    • Often chosen for home defense or carry when allowed by law

    • More expensive, not meant to be shot in huge volumes every weekend

The important part for you as a shooter:

Use FMJ-type ammo to build skill. Use a proven defensive load for serious protection, and test enough to be confident in your gun.

4. Why not just run defensive ammo for everything?

You could bring a pile of premium defensive ammo to the range and shoot only that… but most people don’t, for a few good reasons:

  1. Cost

    • Defensive ammo is usually significantly more expensive per round.

    • You’ll end up shooting less often, and frequency matters more than fancy ammo if you’re trying to get better.

  2. Wear & tear vs benefit

    • For regular practice, you don’t need top-shelf loads to work on trigger control, sight picture and fundamentals.

  3. Availability

    • Defensive loads sometimes get tight in the market. You don’t want your entire supply to be gone because of a single weekend.

A more realistic setup for most San Diego shooters:

  • Train mostly with good, reliable FMJ range ammo

  • Keep a confirmed defensive load ready for serious use

  • Occasionally run a box or two of your defensive ammo through your gun to confirm it feeds and feels right

We can help you build exactly that mix based on your budget.

5. Why not just use range ammo for home defense?

On the other side of the spectrum, some folks say:

“I’ll just use the cheap stuff for everything. If it goes bang, I’m good.”

We get the budget concerns, but this mindset ignores the fact that the stakes are very different between punching holes in paper and defending your life.

It’s smart to choose ammo that’s designed for the role and has a strong track record in similar firearms. That’s why we generally recommend:

  • FMJ-style for training

  • Well-chosen defensive loads for home defense/carry, within the bounds of the law and your comfort level

If you’re unsure what makes sense for you, talk to us in person. We’ll walk you through options in a straightforward, non-scary way.

6. How much of each should I keep on hand?

This is where most people overcomplicate things. Here’s a simple, practical approach we see work well for a lot of customers:

For a primary

defensive pistol

(like a bedside or carry gun)

  • Range ammo:

    • Aim for at least 200–500 rounds of reliable FMJ for training and occasional refreshers

  • Defensive ammo:

    • Enough to load your magazines, plus at least 1–2 boxes extra

    • Shoot a box when you first choose it to confirm function

    • Shoot another box occasionally to keep rotation fresh and confidence high

For a

range-focused pistol or rifle

  • Lean harder into range ammo, with a smaller amount of defensive ammo in reserve if you want that option.

For a

home-defense shotgun

  • Mix of:

    • Target loads for familiarization and basic practice

    • Appropriate defensive loads for when it’s doing serious work

If you give us your budget and how often you shoot, we’ll help you build a sane ammo plan instead of guessing.

7. How LAX Ammo San Diego helps you choose

At LAX Ammo San Diego, we’re not interested in selling you the most expensive box just because it looks cool.

What we do instead:

  • Ask you what you actually do with your firearm

    • Range only? Home defense? Both?

  • Look at your caliber, gun model and local range rules

  • Recommend:

    1. A solid, realistic range ammo for practice

    2. A defensive option that fits your goals and budget

  • Explain the difference in plain language, including how much of each makes sense to buy.

If a certain fancy load isn’t necessary for your use case, we’ll tell you that. No guilt trips.

8. A simple, real-world plan for San Diego shooters

If you’re feeling stuck, here’s a straightforward way to move forward:

  1. Figure out your primary role

    • “This is my nightstand pistol.”

    • “This is just a range toy.”

    • “This rifle does double duty: range + hunting/defense.”

  2. Come see us or call/text 858-987-0509

    • Tell us your firearm, role and approximate budget.

    • Example: “I’ve got a 9mm pistol for home defense and range. I have $X to spend on ammo today.”

  3. Let us build you a combo

    • We’ll pair a range FMJ with a defensive load that makes sense.

    • We’ll explain the difference so you know what’s in each box and when to use it.
